چکیده
Using the RXTE PCA we discovered dips in the X-ray light curves of the black-hole candidate GRO J1655−40 during outburst. They are short (∼minute) and deep (down to ∼8% of the out-of-dip intensity). Similar kind of dips were found in 90 s measurements of the RXTE ASM during the same outburst. The occurrences of the dips are consistent with the optically determined orbital period, and were found between photometric orbital phases 0.72 and 0.86. This constitutes the first evidence for orbital variations in X-rays for GRO J1655−40. The PCA data indicate that an absorbing medium is responsible for these dips. Using these results we are able constrain the extent of the absorbing medium and the central X-ray source. GRO J1655−40 was in the canonical high state during our PCA observations.

We suggest Nova Sco 1994 (GRO 1655-40) as a possible relic of a Gamma Ray Burster (GRB) and Type Ib supernova (SN) explosion, showing that there is evidence both that the black hole was spun up by accretion and that there was a supernova explosion. We use the disc energy delivered from the rotational energy of the black hole to power the SN, and give arguments that roughly equal energy goes int...

We use data obtained with the PCA onboard RXTE to analyze the spectral variations of the black hole candidate and superluminal source GRS 1915+105. Our results suggest that despite the complicated structure of the X-ray light curve, all spectral changes observed in this source can be explained as a sudden disappearing of the inner part of the accretion disk around the compact object, followed b...

GRS 1915+105, one of the two known galactic microquasars, shows an extremely complex variability in the X-ray band, comparable to no other X-ray source in the sky. Making use of RXTE/PCA data, we have analyzed the X-ray spectral distribution throughout the variability. We find that all variations can be attributed to the rapid appearance and disappearance of the inner region of an optically-thi...

The physical conditions in the inner parsec of accretion disks believed to orbit the central black holes in active galactic nuclei can be probed by imaging the absorption (by ionized gas in the disk) of background emission from a radio counterjet. We report high angular resolution VLBI observations of the nearby (∼ 40 Mpc) radio galaxy NGC 4261 that confirm free-free absorption of radio emissio...

ASCA and GINGA X-ray data from the magnetic Cataclysmic Variable BY Cam show that the spectrum is strongly affected by complex absorption, probably from the pre-shock accretion column. The intrinsic emission from the shock is significantly better described by the theoretically expected multi-temperature structure rather than a single temperature plasma, but with cyclotron cooling probably suppr...
